Est. 1987 — Rockford, Illinois
A community of smiths dedicated to preserving and advancing the ancient craft of blacksmithing on the banks of the Rock River.
The Rock River Blacksmith Guild has been the heartbeat of the blacksmithing community in northern Illinois since 1987. We are smiths, artists, hobbyists, and historians united by the fire and the anvil.
Whether you're a seasoned professional or have never held a hammer, our guild welcomes you. We support all village events to share techniques, showcase work, and keep an ancient craft alive for future generations.
Read our full history →"Iron is docile when heated; so too is a craftsman humble before their trade."
We are the area's only private blacksmithing guild, with a goal of sparking curiosity and appreciation for the blacksmith's art and history.
Through our partnership with Rock Valley College, we offer structured beginner programs — bringing the ancient craft to a new generation of smiths.
Since 2023 the guild has opened its shop to support a 4H Special Interest club, connecting young people with the tradition of working iron.
More than a hobby group — we're a brotherhood and sisterhood forged over decades of shared passion and mutual respect on the Rock River.
Whether you want to learn to smith through our Rock Valley College program, or are simply interested in blacksmithing and the guild, we'd love to hear from you. No experience necessary — just curiosity and enthusiasm.
